Billy Bob Project
Sometimes it is easy to forget that audio production is not only recording and editing music tracks, but also includes editing spoken word. This type of skill is used to create audio books, recording voice overs for commercials and movies, and especially to produce radio broadcasts and advertisements.
You have been hired as an audio editor for Commercials Incorporated. They want you to create a commercial for a car lot. They have provided you with the voice over (VO) and final script. In this project, you will edit a raw voice recording to match a script. Your client is Billy Bob's Auto Warehouse. You have his original recording (as you will see, Mr. Billy Bob is not so good at recording a commercial) and the written script of what the radio commercial should say exactly. As you learn how to cut and splice clips in Audition, arrange Billy Bob's recording in the correct order. When you have matched the script, add sound effects and background music to make the production appealing and persuasive. Remember to match the script exactly! Remember the background music should fit your target audience and not overpower the voice-over. As you work, save your project as an Audition project file (.SESX) and name it lastname+firstname+billybob. When you are finished, export it using Export>Multitrack Mixdown>Entire Session and choose the .MP3 encoder and name the output file the same name (ex: stilesnatashabillybob.MP3). Submit the .MP3 file to Google Drive. Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements! |

Monster Trucks Project
Now that you have learned a few basic tools and features of Audition, you will apply that knowledge in this project. As you may notice when listening to the radio, the advertisements incorporate special track effects like echo and reverb to help grab attention and persuade the audience.
You have been hired as an audio editor for Monster Trucks Incorporated. They want you to edit a commercial for the upcoming tour. In this project, you will learn how to add special effects to the tracks of audio in Audition, as well as, further incorporate sound effects and background music to help your radio advertisements sound appealing and persuasive. Your client is Dorton Arena in Raleigh, NC. They are hosting a monster truck rally and Sesame Street wrestling match (fun for adults and children!). You have been given a raw recording of the commercial, a voice-over from Elmo talking trash to Big Bird, and a sound effect or two. You have also been provided with the final script of the commercial. Your job is to cut and splice the original audio recording to match the script, then add in some excerpts from Elmo's voice-over. This time, every individual clip that you splice needs to be on its own track in Audition. You will use the software to add special effects like track panning, echo, reverb, and others. Finally, you will incorporate sound effects and background music to help persuade your audience to attend the monster truck rally and Sesame Street wrestling tournament. As you work, save your project as an Audition project file (.SESX) and name it lastname+firstname+monster. When you are finished, export it using Export>Multitrack Mixdown>Entire Session and choose the .MP3 encoder and name the output file the same name (ex: stilesnatashamonster.MP3). Submit the .MP3 file using the form below. Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements! |

Foley Artist Project
Effective audio is a key part to making a successful video production. It takes specialized audio technicians to help create an awesome fight scene or stunning chase sequence. During these types of video scenes, extra sound effects have to be created and dubbed into the video to make things look and sound more realistic. The audio technicians that work to create these sound effects are called Foley Artists. You can find out more information about the Foley Artist career path here.
In this project, you will become a Foley Artist as you add real-life sound effects to an otherwise silent nature video. The goal of the sound effects are to make the video more realistic and entertaining - reaching more of the viewer's' senses and capturing the audience more effectively. Download the video located on the right. You will see a nature scene with water, animals, a train traveling through the mountains, and an airplane flying into the sunset. Also included on the right are some sound effects that will be helpful and that work well with the given video, you may also want to use the Audition loops available for download. You are to incorporate sound effects and background music into the video to help it appear more realistic. You can find additional sound effects online to add more realism to your project. Remember your audio levels should all sound the same, but that your background music should be low in the background and not overpower your natural sounds. You will need to import all the files into Audition and then create new multitrack to view the video file while editing the audio. As you work, save your project as an Audition project file (.SESX) and name it lastname+firstname+foley. Submit file to Google Drive. Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements! |

Group Album Project
The ability to work cooperatively in a group is something that you will have to practice no matter what type of job you have in the future. In this project, you will team up with a group of your classmates to create an original album - complete with song tracks from each member - and a printed CD cover designed in Photoshop.
You will need to use the Adobe Audition library of music loops to select and assemble to produce an attractive, professional sounding song track. These are located in the Stiles - Student Shared drive. We will be using the Adobe Audition to create two original songs and then export them. After creating your songs, you will team up with your group members to design an album cover and tracklist. We will cut out the printed album covers, burn all of the group's songs onto a CD, and then assemble a finalized group album. As you work, save your project as an Audition project file (.SESX) and name it lastname+firstname+song1 (song2 for the second song). When you are finished export it using File>Export>Multitrack Mixdown>Entire Session as file type .MP3 and name the output file the same name (ex: stilesnatashasong1.MP3). Submit the .MP3 file to Google Drive in your team's folder. Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements! When you have finished your two original songs, use the Peer Evaluation Survey (see link on the right) to rate your group members' contributions to the completion of the album. Please be honest! Your responses are totally anonymous. |

Narrative Audio Book Project
Audio books, novels, and textbooks are becoming more and more common in today's society. They can be used for entertainment for long trips or car rides or for educational purposes. They are also used for the visually impaired and have become an important tool in modern education and entertainment.
In this project, you will create a small piece of an audio book by creating an audio narrative. Use Audition to create a project where you will record yourself reading a passage from Night. The passage should be at least one full page in length. In addition, you should include background music and, if appropriate, sound effects. It is crucial that you identify the tone and the mood of the passage in order to successfully convey the author’s message to your audience. Tips:
Your voice over must be read with inflection and emotion. You can create the background music using multiple tracks or use one of the jingles as your background track. You can use multiple sound effects as long as it is not distracting. You can use sound effects from Audition or you can find sound effects online to use as well. As you work, save your project as an Audition project file (.SESX) and name it lastname+firstname+abook. When you are finished, export it using Export>Multitrack Mixdown>Entire Session menu and choose the .MP3 encoder and name the output file the same name (ex: stilesnatashaabook.MP3) Submit the .MP3 file using Google Drive. Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements! |
